Periodontal disease

Periodontal disease is a common pathology of the gums. When the teeth are not cleaned correctly it causes an accumulation of bacterial plaque between the teeth and the gums which makes them redden, become inflamed and bleed easily during brushing. It can also become evident in the form of a tingling or the sensation of having something stuck at the base of the teeth. Over time the gum recedes, forming folds or characteristic bags. To this is added a persistent disagreeable taste, bad breath and the unusual sensation of heat in the mouth. This first stage of the disease is called gingivitis and if it isn't treated adequately it will evolve until it causes periodontal disease, colloquially called pyorrhoea. In this case, the inflammation and the infection are chronic, which causes pain in the area, bleeding of the gums, the secretion of pus, and movement in the teeth.
Periodontitis is very serious as it affects the support tissues of the teeth. In the most serious cases it can even lead to leaving the area where the roots divide uncovered and causing mobility in the teeth, until they are lost definitively.

Adequate Cleaning
The best way to prevent periodontal disease is to carry out adequate dental hygiene. Tartar is the main cause of periodontal disease and brushing the teeth is not enough to get rid of it as its consistency is hard and it is adhered to the surface of the tooth. Nonetheless, it can be removed with specific instruments that the dental hygienist uses in dental cleaning.
Along with tooth decay, periodontal disease is one of the most frequent pathologies. In Spain, 68% of children have gingivitis, and between 50 and 60% of adults suffer from more or less serious forms of periodontal disease.
