Dental implants to make you smile again

Carmen Alvarez is 52 years old. She's a young woman who hasn't had too much luck with her dental health. She suffered from tooth decay from an early age, and after several fillings and root canal work she decided to get rid of the problem and have a good part of her teeth extracted. This decision has had several consequences throughout her life. Carmen has managed the best she can at meal times: she's had to give up certain foods and others she hasn't been able to chew properly. These difficulties due to lack of teeth have led to stomach problems and problems of articulation in her jaw. Her image has also suffered: Carmen smiles much less than she used to.
Carmen's case is hypothetical, but this situation perfectly describes what many people who suffer from tooth loss have to go through everyday.

The latest advances in Dentistry offer the option of replacing lost teeth using implants, an effective and definitive solution with which we can achieve a complete oral rehabilitation, aesthetically as well as functionally.

What are implants?
Dental implants are small cylindrical pieces which are inserted into the jawbone and perform the same function as the roots of natural teeth. Once applied, the dental surgeon moves to the rehabilitation stage, that is to say, fitting a crown similar to the tooth onto the implant, perfectly adapted to perform the normal chewing functions and aesthetically the same as a natural tooth.
Doctor Humberto Arias, Director of Clínica Odontológica Integral (COI) confirms that dental implants are a very suitable solution. "Nowadays tooth replacement with implants is one hundred percent safe, There is no risk of rejection in this type of operation and it gives the best results," as Doctor Arias explains. "At Clínica Odontológica Integral we are equipped with an advanced operating theatre with which we can offer our patients the highest levels of safety during the operation and an exhaustive post-op monitoring process of the evolution of the implant."
In order for the patient to receive an implant, they have to satisfy certain general health conditions, and specifically in the area where the implant will take place. The area of the bone has to be of a suitable thickness and be in perfect conditions. However, not all cases are ideal and have to be evaluated by the dental surgeon, as it's possible that there has been loss of the bone mass. "We also have solutions and effective techniques for these situations. At COI we use the latest advances in bone regeneration and gum reconstruction which allows us to completely recover the area where the implant will later be performed."
"It isn't a question of an aggressive operation in any case. The patient is back to normal within a few hours," explains Doctor Arias, "only with a humane team and facilities such as those available at COI is it possible to tackle these treatments. Our centre has a dental surgeon and a surgical team for this type of complicated operation." After the necessary period of time to complete the bone regeneration, the implant can be inserted.

Fear of Dentists
If visiting the dentist is a cause of stress for many people, a procedure of this type could cause greater concern. The fact is that neither bone regeneration nor implants are painful operations. Except for some discomfort during the first 24 hours, the patient only has to worry about following the advice that the surgeon gives them. "And moreover, for our most nervous patients, or for those who a visit to the dentist causes the greatest stress, at Clínica Odontológica Integral we can now provide a conscious sedative, or conscious general anaesthetic, " as Doctor Arias explains, "It's an anaesthetic technique recently introduced to Spain which produces a pleasant state of relaxation in the patient. The patient doesn't lose consciousness at any time and it is especially recommended in cases of patients with fear or nervousness during the dental treatment. Combining the conscious sedative with local anaesthetic removes any discomfort during the operation."

The objective of the implant procedure is to achieve a healthy mouth, perfectly functional and which looks great thanks to the new materials which have been developed for dentistry which look similar to the natural tooth. The security of the implant and its perfect adaptation to the mouth are a guarantee to make you smile again.
